Cal-Ann Farms

today was the start of something new... basil. you'll have to meet the family of Cal-Ann Farms... www.calannfarms.com... read their story. it's amazing. after 19 years of dairy farming, this family switched to beef cattle and crop farming... which then led to raising Tilapia fish in the buildings that were used for dairy operation and now basil in a greenhouse- smack dab bewtween 2 silos on their farm in Basehor, KS.

all of the basil is cared for by hand... by hand. i had no idea such care went into this amazing plant from seed to the store. truly. every leaf is cared for by hand. no machines. no power plant. human hands. right here in kansas city.

the baby basils...

the basil ready to make it's way to the grocery stores and markets...

so what am i doing out at Cal-Ann Farms taking pictures of their basil? Cal-Ann Farms will be featured on the cover of TASTEBUD MAGAZINE next month... and i am very excited to be taking the photographs for the cover. we'll keep you posted on which ones get selected. TASTEBUD MAGAZINE is KC's guide to food, drink, places and people...recipes, restaurants, expert cooking tips, entertaining ideas, events... you name it... so many new things to check out. i hope you will... and watch for Cal-Ann Farms on the cover of Tastebud Magazine...www.tastebudmagazine.com

Very nice images. I'm an urban gardener as well as amateur shooter, and it always amazes me to see what great photographs can do for food.

Thanks for the backroom view into this interesting operation.
